The Risks and Benefits of Coconut Oil Supplements

 | Fuel For Thought®

Cognate Nutritionals, makers of Fuel For Thought®, knows that it is important to consider all the facts when thinking about our health.

Coconut oil  is extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts, the fruits harvested from the coconut palm. In addition to adding a delicious flavor to foods, coconut oil also has received a lot of attention regarding its health benefits.

Coconut oil is a saturated fat. Saturated fats include butter, red meats, and palm kernel oil. However, unlike other saturated fats, coconut oil’s fats are medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), not long chain. What does this mean? The body finds MCTs reasonably easy to metabolize.

Coconuts contain more MCTs than any other natural food.  When MCTs are consumed in sufficient quantity, the liver metabolizes them into ketones. Ketones then quickly become available to fuel the brain in performing its many functions.

Ketones Enhance Memory

The concentration of MCTs in Fuel For Thought®, for example, provide enough ketones to enhance memory, focus, and energy as well as support neurological function.

The American Pharmacists Association website states that the fatty acids in coconut oil are readily absorbed by the intestine, and that the high lauric acid in coconut oil does not increase LDL (the bad cholesterol) levels. In fact, the article points out that studies have shown a rise in HDL (the good cholesterol) with consumption of coconut oil.

As with most assertions regarding health, consumption of coconut oil supplements can also mean risks.

First, the quality of the coconut oil is important. Coconut oil in some supplements and in the form of coconut oil you can purchase at the grocery store is often heat processed. The processing  compromises the functionality of the coconut oil. The coconut oil for cooking usually comes in solid form, which is difficult to consume on its own and challenging to incorporate into your diet. Plus, it is high in calories, making it difficult to get enough into your daily diet to obtain the full benefits, without causing weight gain.

Natural, cold pressed, organic extra virgin coconut oil is the variety that can give the most benefits. The cold press process means no extra heat is required to refine the oil, making this a  type of coconut oil that retains the most beneficial properties.

Coconut Oil Supplements

One product that has recently been showing up for sale is so-called liquid coconut oil. In its natural state, coconut oil is a solid. The “liquid” coconut oil is actually “fractionated coconut oil,” which means that most, if not all, the lauric acid has been removed. Since lauric acid protects against bacteria and viruses, some of the beneficial qualities of pure, extra virgin coconut oil, then, has been erased from the product. The process used can also compromise any cognitive benefits from the other MCTs in the oil.

Coconut oil can be a beneficial means of achieving and maintaining good health. But, like with anything to do with health and nutrition, it’s important to know all the facts.

Please let us know what you think about the benefits and risks of coconut oil.
