The Risks and Benefits of Coconut Oil Supplements

Coconut oil  is extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts, the fruits harvested from the coconut palm. In addition to adding a delicious flavor to foods, coconut oil also has received a lot of attention regarding its health benefits.

Coconut oil is a saturated fat. Saturated fats include butter, red meats, and palm kernel oil. However, unlike other saturated fats, coconut oil’s fats are medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), not long chain. What does this mean? The body finds MCTs reasonably easy to metabolize.

Coconuts contain more MCTs than any other natural food.  When MCTs are consumed in sufficient quantity, the liver metabolizes them into ketones. Ketones then quickly become available to fuel the brain in performing its many functions.

First, the quality of the coconut oil is important. Coconut oil in some supplements and in the form of coconut oil you can purchase at the grocery store is often heat processed. The processing  compromises the functionality of the coconut oil. The coconut oil for cooking usually comes in solid form, which is difficult to consume on its own and challenging to incorporate into your diet. Plus, it is high in calories, making it difficult to get enough into your daily diet to obtain the full benefits, without causing weight gain.

The process used can also compromise any cognitive benefits from the other MCTs in the oil.

Coconut oil can be a beneficial means of achieving and maintaining good health. But, like with anything to do with health and nutrition, it’s important to know all the facts.
