The most accepted effective treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a combination of medication and behavioral therapy. Stimulant drugs, such as Ritalin, Adderall XR, Concerta, and Metadate, are the most commonly prescribed medications for ADHD. It is believed that the stimulants boost the level of neurotransmitters, chemicals that enable the transfer of impulses from one nerve to another nerve, muscle, or other structure in the body.
But, as with many medications, stimulants have risks and side effects, which worry parents. It stands to reason that parents will search for more natural treatments for ADHD, but how effective have these natural treatments proved to be?
The short answer is: Not very effective at all.
A study published in the New York Academy of Science found that many of the natural treatments for ADHD that people use are ineffective in adults with ADHD. These include vitamin supplements, Chinese herbs, and various homeopathic remedies. In fact, some of these treatments − mega dose vitamin combinations − could be dangerous.
On the other hand, the study also found that supplements of essential fatty acids may have promise, but more research needs to be done.
Some natural approaches can create a supportive environment for children with ADHD, as suggested by the Mayo Clinic.
The following are suggested ways that parents can help their children with ADHD find more success and less anxiety:
Show lots of affection.
Children feel more secure and their self-esteem receives a boost if they know they are loved and appreciated. Find and celebrate the attributes of your child that are positive. Positive attention yields positive results.
Find ways to help your child feel better and become self-disciplined.
These can be taking care of a pet, taking a dance or martial arts class, or doing art projects. Again, the small successes experienced when displaying a special talent can result in a better self image and more confidence.
Help with organizational skills.
Keep a daily assignment notebook with your child and provide a quiet place to study. Organize the things in your child’s room in groups and label each area. Help your child keep his or her room uncluttered.
Keep a schedule.
Maintain a regular daily routine. Knowing what to expect at specific times helps cut down on anxiety. The schedule should include a regular time for meals, naps and bedtime. Change and lack of order can be difficult for a child with ADHD.
Work to maintain a calm demeanor, even when your child is acting out. Setting a good example is a good way to help foster good behavior.
