Some methods are common sense.

Getting enough sleep helps the brain achieve the rest it needs to operate on a higher level. Research conducted in Germany earlier this year, as reported on ABC, showed that the brain continues to work on problems that puzzle us during the day, and that we can solve those problems more quickly after a good, long sleep.

Physical exercise, too, helps thinking. Exercise increases blood flow during the actual activity, but it also makes the blood flow more efficient, even at rest. The brain depends on efficient and sufficient blood flow to operate properly, and much recent research is showing that regular exercise sharpens thinking skills.

Proper nutrition is a key factor in achieving and maintaining good health, including mental development and acuity. Good nutrition can help the brain, no matter what age it is. There is growing evidence that some foods may do even more to enhance brain health and function. For example, green tea contains chemicals known as polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants, which protect against the free radicals that can harm brain cells. The important thing is to find some brain-challenging activities that you like and fit them into your schedule on a regular basis. Engaging in mentally challenging activities just once in a while seems to do little to boost the brain, according to Web MD. It is also essential that the activities remain truly stimulating. When solving acrostics becomes easy, switch to anagrams or number puzzles. Playing more demanding games or playing against a more skilled opponent will help your own brain make new connections.

The old adage, “Use it, or lose it,” may have meant muscle tone or body strength, but it seems that it also can apply to our all-important brains.
