Interest in how to improve mental sharpness seems to be on the upswing. Websites, blogs, articles, and programs on developing your mind are everywhere. But what is mental sharpness, and how can you make your brain sharper? These are questions that interest Cognate Nutritionals, makers of Fuel For Thought®.

Coconut Oil Supplements and Mental Sharpness

Psychology experts say mental sharpness, also known as mental acuity, involves memory, focus, concentration, and understanding. Basically, it is how well your mind is working. And, just like a muscle, a brain can be in shape and function at a high level, or it can be flabby and sluggish.

Some methods are common sense.

Getting enough sleep helps the brain achieve the rest it needs to operate on a higher level. Research conducted in Germany earlier this year, as reported on ABC, showed that the brain continues to work on problems that puzzle us during the day, and that we can solve those problems more quickly after a good, long sleep.

Physical exercise, too, helps thinking. Exercise increases blood flow during the actual activity, but it also makes the blood flow more efficient, even at rest. The brain depends on efficient and sufficient blood flow to operate properly, and much recent research is showing that regular exercise sharpens thinking skills.

Proper nutrition is a key factor in achieving and maintaining good health, including mental development and acuity. Good nutrition can help the brain, no matter what age it is. There is growing evidence that some foods may do even more to enhance brain health and function. For example, green tea contains chemicals known as polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants, which protect against the free radicals that can harm brain cells. Berries, the omega-3 oils in certain fish, and other foods are being examined as important factors in maintaining brain health.

Alzheimer’s Treatment

There is also research underway to see if the medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s) in coconut oil can provide a vital energy that brain cells require but are not getting due to conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. The Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute at the University of South Florida is currently underway with a placebo-controlled study of Alzheimer’s patients who are taking Fuel For Thought®, a rich source of MCT’s proven to elevate ketones, providing an alternative fuel for the brain.

Memory enhancement techniques have been around for decades. For example, recalling the five Great Lakes can be easy if you remember HOMES, which stands for Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior. There are also complex mnemonic systems to remember lists of numbers.

More recently, however, research is beginning to verify that even “old brains” can see improved memory and other aspects of mental sharpness. Brain games, mental workouts, puzzles, strategy games and the like can help your brain function more efficiently and effectively. Whether you challenge your brain with crosswords or Sudoku, play competitive chess or backgammon, or take on the latest puzzle crazes found online, the important thing is to find ways that make the brain cells forge new connections.

Some research indicates that learning new skills, such as a new language, playing an instrument, or mentally demanding tasks such as photography can do the most to sharpen the brain. The investment in pushing your brain to the limit can pay off in increased brain power.

The important thing is to find some brain-challenging activities that you like and fit them into your schedule on a regular basis. Engaging in mentally challenging activities just once in a while seems to do little to boost the brain, according to Web MD. It is also essential that the activities remain truly stimulating. When solving acrostics becomes easy, switch to anagrams or number puzzles. Playing more demanding games or playing against a more skilled opponent will help your own brain make new connections.

The old adage, “Use it, or lose it,” may have meant muscle tone or body strength, but it seems that it also can apply to our all-important brains.
